First off- congrats to C.C., Victor and Grady. I was a bit surprised by Grady’s inclusion. This isn’t his best year, but he probably deserves to be there as much as Manny Ramirez.
Since the fans are the ones responsible for voting in the starters I have a bone to pick with the fans. How in the world does Ivan Rodriguez start over Victor Martinez? Talk about your name recognition. There is no question that Ivan is a hall of fame catcher, with good offensive stats for his career, but better known for his defense. Truth is that Ivan is struggling to throw out runners this season. He still calls an excellent game, something that is often overlooked when discussing catchers, but I doubt that is the reason he got the nod on the fans ballot. Victor deserves to start this game. Yes, he plays some first base, but not enough to raise a stink over.
C.C. was an obvious choice, but I was a little surprised that Borowski got no love here. Tied for the league lead in saves should count for something shouldn’t it? Papelbon is the one that I guess he would get the nod over, and if you ask which I would rather have as my closer I would probably say Paplebon too. Gil Meche. Has there been a more obvious best player on a crappy team inclusion?
Some day we will have to get Pronk to the Mid-Summer classic. Won’t be this year, but maybe next season when the DH will be a position to choose from again.
